Going into Wednesday’s game against East Allegheny, Serra Catholic coach Brian Dzurenda said he was hoping his team could pitch its first shutout of the season.
Dzurenda’s hopes came to fruition as the Eagles took down East Allegheny, 7-0, in its first home game of the season at Boston Field.
“It was just nice to play today in general. We put our time in here last night and today prepping the field,” Dzurenda said. “It was great to get a shutout and get out here again after not being able to play yesterday.”
The Eagles (3-0) allowed just four hits in the game, striking out nine batters and walking two. Matt Bisceglia got the start and pitched three innings, allowing three hits. Max Rocco pitched a hitless two innings and struck out five, while Zack Karp allowed one hit over two innings.
“The pitchers did well. It wasn’t their best but they did well. They changed speeds, they threw strikes for the most part, but there were a couple too many walks and hit batters,” Dzurenda said. “But that’s to be expected the first time out here. The mound’s not in good shape right now, and I told the kids that there are gonna be physical errors, and let’s just not make any mental errors.”
Serra Catholic got seven hits off of the Wild Cats’ pitchers, and walked eight times.
Dzurenda said he hoped for more hits, but that’s to be expected, since the Eagles hadn’t played in four days. Their patience, though, is a good sign that the Eagles are already locked in with their plate approach.
“We’ve always been patient at the plate. We make them work,” Dzurenda said. “Most of the kids are veterans that are playing for us. Other than (Zach) Black and (Ethan) Coddington today, everybody has played on this team. They know what we’re trying to do; we’re trying to make them throw strikes and get the pitch count up.”
