Icy roads cause accidents

Mother nature played a cruel April Fool’s Day joke Thursday, dropping the temperature as well as some snow.
Falling temperatures and wet roads Thursday night made for slippery travel conditions and had first responders and road crews on alert.
“Please be very careful if you’re driving tonight,” the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh tweeted around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. “With the snow that has fallen today and temperatures falling into the 20s, roadways have become quite slippery across much of the area. Numerous accidents have been reported across area roadways, including I-376 and I-80.”
Just after 10:30 p.m., Rostraver Central Fire Department wrote on Facebook that firefighters were at the Youghiogheny River Bridge on Interstate 70, which was the “scene of multiple accidents.”
The fire department said one patient was transported to a local hospital by Rostraver West Newton Emergency Services, and the interstate was closed to all traffic until the scene was cleared.
State police told the Mon Valley Independent that traffic was restricted to one lane for a time, but the roadway was reopened by 10:40 p.m.
On its 511PA website, PennDOT reported a multi-vehicle crash on I-70 between Exit 40 (Charleroi/Allenport) and Exit 46 (South-Uniontown) that disrupted traffic.
