George M. ‘Red’ Guzzi – Allenport
George M. “Red” Guzzi, 87, of Allenport, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Allenport on Sept. 22, 1933, a son of James S. and Mary Rohaly Guzzi Sr. Red was retired from the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel plant in Allenport, where he worked as a machinist. He was an all-around athlete in high school, having wrestled, ran track and lettered in football and baseball. Red was a Korean War Army veteran. He did his tour on the USS Minx, which ironically is the same ship that brought his brother, James S. Guzzi Jr., (who was killed in Korea on Pork Chop Hill on June 17, 1953) back to the United States. The movie “Pork Chop Hill” premiered in 1959, starring Gregory Peck. Red was proud to be a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 801 in Roscoe and its Honor Guard. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jay’s Golf Club, Allenport Rod & Gun Club and Roscoe United Methodist Church. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, John and Tracy Huff Guzzi of Allenport; a grandson, Sean Guzzi of McKeesport; a granddaughter, Alayna Guzzi of Allenport; and sister-in-law, Darlene Guzzi of Stroal Acres. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Joyce Furnier Guzzi; a grandson, Dylan Guzzi; two brothers, James S. Guzzi Jr. and John E. Guzzi; and a sister, Mary Ann Huber. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021, with Pastor Brian Carroll presiding. Interment will follow at Belle Vernon Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Roscoe American Legion Post No. 801 Honor Guard.
