Eagles capitalize on walks, errors in 16-1 win

Serra Catholic head coach Brian Dzurenda was worried about what he’d see from his team after a lengthy layoff over the Easter holiday.
After Monday’s 16-1 three-inning win over visiting Springdale, he’s more anxious to see how they fare against tougher competition this week.
The Eagles (4-0) batted around twice in the second inning and were the beneficiaries of eight walks and three hit batsmen in a 13-run second inning.
“(Springdale) looks like a young and inexperienced team, but we wanted to come in and get some work in,” Dzurenda said. “I don’t think in all my years we had a layoff as long as the one we had. We didn’t have any practices coming into this one, so I wasn’t sure what we were going to get.”
Serra Catholic scored three runs in the bottom of the first off of Dynamos starter John Hughes.
Dom DeMoss reached on an error when Springdale center fielder Christopher Savko dropped his fly ball. DeMoss made it into second on the play and stole third. Zack Miklos followed with a walk and stole second before Matt Bisceglia ripped a two-run single to left to make it 2-0.
The Eagles benefitted from back to back errors on shortstop Brandon John, who booted a ground ball by Dom Puzzanchera. Then on a ground ball by Jayden Mertz, John looked for a double play but threw the ball into right field allowing Bisceglia to score.
“I was happy to see us take advantage of their mistakes,” Dzurenda said. “That’s what good teams do. We’re going to need to continue that going forward as the schedule gets a little tougher.”
