The Laurel Highlands baseball team showed a young Ringgold team why its among the favorites to win Section 3-4A this season.
The Mustangs (2-1, 2-1) pounded out 14 hits and were untouchable on the bases as they rolled to a 10-2 win at Ken Griffey Sr. Field.
“They’re really good. I think they’re going to be the best team in the section,” Ringgold head coach Don Roberts said. “We just made too many mistakes. We did a couple things right, but we hurt ourselves a few times.”
Ringgold starter Gage Fuller had at least three Mustang runners picked off at first base but each time the Rams were unable to get an out.
“We knew they were going to steal first move a lot,” Roberts said. “We caught them three times. We either had a bad throw or we couldn’t handle the ball. One time they just flat out stole the base anyway.”
The No. 1, 3 and 5 hitters for the Mustangs provided plenty of offense.
Lead-off man Kadin Early went 3 for 5, Nick Kumor was 3 for 3 and Alex McClain was 3 for 4.
McClain finished with a triple and two singles and drove in four runs. Early finished with a pair of doubles and three RBIs and Kumor was 3 for 3 with a triple, RBI and three runs scored.
“Gage started off really good. He got two outs on two pitches,” Roberts said. “Then he walked the next two guys. That’s something you can’t afford to do against a good team.”
