Class 2A Serra Catholic scored early and often en route to a convincing 13-3 victory over Class 3A South Allegheny in a non-section matchup Thursday at Boston Field.
The Eagles (7-0), who scored 10-plus runs for the fourth straight game, collected 15 hits and had five different players finish with multi-hit games in the triumph.
“With so many games, we haven’t been able to really practice, but the kids have still been able to get their swings in on their own with the batting cage being down here,” Serra Catholic head coach Brian Dzurenda said. “We’ve been doubling up on BP before games and the cage has really been a godsend this year for us.”
Zach Miklos led the offensive attack for Serra Catholic as he went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Dom DeMoss, Matt Bisceglia, Zach Black and Eli Kite each finished with two hits.
The Eagles chased SA starter Nick Bryner after two innings as he allowed seven earned runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out one.
Logan Helster tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking a pair and striking out one.
“Our second pitcher is a sophomore and it was a big game for him just being able to battle through against a good-hitting baseball team,” SA head coach Dennis Reist said.
