Officials in New Eagle want to enforce the borough’s house-numbering ordinance after they received complaints last month from first responders.
At their meeting Tuesday night, council members gave the go-ahead to Administrator Kim Koontz to send out letters to residents who don’t display their house numbers.
According to Koontz, there are 96 residents in the borough in violation of the house-numbering ordinance.
According to the ordinance, any residence with a number that has been assigned should have it displayed on a contrasting background that is easily observed and readable from public sidewalks and roads.
The ordinance states that trailers inside trailer parks must each be identified by a number.
According to the ordinance, all numbers and letters should be four inches high.
The ordinance states it’s the responsibility of a residence’s owner or occupant to comply.
Penalties for ordinance violations are a fine of not more than $1,000 plus prosecution costs. Failure to pay fines can result in imprisonment for up to 30 days.
“There is a consequence to not having them,” Councilwoman Saundra Bobnar said.
