The weekend’s chilly temperatures proved that even Mother Nature won’t stop Mon Valley fishermen from reeling in the big one.
On Saturday morning, members of the Valley Inn Sportsmen’s Association stocked Pigeon Creek at Peno’s Plaza with 300 pounds of trout from Laurel Hill fish farm in Rockwood, Pa.
The event was the second stocking of the spring season, and a third event will likely take place in the fall.
Rusty Polonoli, president of the association and a Monongahela councilman, said Saturday’s stocking featured bigger fish than previous events, and one lucky fisherman caught a 24-inch trout that weighed almost 10 pounds.
“That’s a pretty big fish,” Polonoli said. “We usually stock around 18-inchers, but Laurel Hill ran out of those sized fish. We could’ve gone smaller or bigger, so I went bigger.”
This is the fourth year the association has stocked the creek, which flows to the Monongahela River. Polonoli said stocking the creek twice in the spring and once in the fall assures year-round fishing.
“You wouldn’t believe how many guys were fishing in the winter,” he said. “Every day, you’ll see someone fishing. You wouldn’t believe how many women do it. From little kids all the way up, everyone seems to be enjoying it. We’re just trying to give the people something to do.”
