The Ringgold baseball team watched a three-run lead evaporate in the final inning of its Section 3-4A home game against Greensburg Salem Monday.
But the Rams rallied and sophomore Gianni Cantini delivered a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 victory as Zane Mahoney trotted home for the game-winning run.
“I didn’t say anything to (Cantini), I just wanted him to put the ball in play with just one out,” Rams coach Don Roberts said. “Basically, if he puts it in play, you would normally get a run there. He did a great job and hit the ball pretty hard right up the middle.”
Eli Callaway got the win in relief despite allowing the tying run to score. The late rally by the Golden Lions (1-7, 1-6) spoiled the great start by Rams starting pitcher Lorenzo Glasser. The sophomore hurler went six-plus innings, allowing a single run on three hits. He only walked one batter on 76 pitches.
“(Glasser) had really good command. The biggest thing was first pitch strikes and going right at guys,” Roberts said. “He didn’t waste too many pitches; he was very efficient and very effective today.”
