Bob Macey, the incumbent who is running to hold the District 9 seat on Allegheny County Council, faced opposition this year in the Democratic primary.
But unofficial results from the county’s elections division showed that Macey, who ran unopposed in the last election cycle in both the primary and general elections and has held the seat since 2006, was holding a commanding lead as of presstime Tuesday.
Steven Singer, a lifelong Mon Valley resident and a teacher at Steel Valley Middle School, challenged Macey for the party’s nod.
With 97.44% of precincts reporting at 11:41 p.m. Tuesday, the unofficial results showed Macey, who was endorsed by the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, captured 5,759 votes to Singer’s 4,058. Unofficial results from the Allegheny County Elections Division show there were 74 Democratic write-in votes as of presstime.
The unofficial results from the county (with nearly 98% of precincts reporting) showed there were 217 Republican write-in votes, but no Republicans ran an official campaign for the District 9 seat.
means that if the unofficial results as of Tuesday night hold true — and barring a write-in campaign in the fall — Macey will represent District 9 for another four years.
The cities of Duquesne and McKeesport, Dravosburg, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln, Port Vue, Versailles, West Mifflin and White Oak boroughs; and Elizabeth, Forward, North Versailles and South Versailles townships comprise District 9.
“The polls have closed and very few results are in. Right now it seems to be a toss up,” Singer said on his campaign’s Facebook page around 10 p.m. “No matter what happens tonight, I just want you to know that I am forever grateful for the love and support the campaign received. If we pull through, the credit belongs to so many volunteers, organizations, fellow candidates and everyday voters. You came out in droves to donate money, hours, advice, and support. Just know that I see you and you are appreciated. If you’re like me, you’re anxiously watching the results as they come in. We may have pulled this off. We may have not. Either way, I love you all.”
