The City of Monessen appears to have overwhelmingly voted for change as Ron Mozer has beaten incumbent Mayor Matt Shorraw by a wide margin.
Mail-in ballots are not fully counted and votes are not official until certified by the county elections bureau.
Preliminary results show Mozer earned 757 votes to Shorraw’s 511. There are 220 Republican write-in votes.
Shorraw, who was seeking his second term as mayor, reserved comment on the election results until the votes are fully counted.
“I feel great,” Mozer said, quoting the Jimmy Cliff song, “I can see clearly now, the rain is gone.”
Mozer said he and his wife, Bonnie, were first to vote in their precinct and then spent the day visiting the high school and other precincts.
While at the precincts, Mozer said he would hang back as some other campaigners seemed to press voters.
“All I would say at the other end was, ‘I’m glad to see you vote’ and I didn’t pressure them. I didn’t even say, ‘Vote for Ron Mozer.’ And when they came out of the polls, they’d sneak a thumbs up to me,” Mozer said.
He believes people came to the polls ready to vote and they weren’t going to be swayed by last minute pressure.
It’s been his way of approaching this race all along.
“I fully intend to continue that,” Mozer said. “What has happened in the past is the past. I don’t know of a time machine that will let us change things in time 10 years ago. Why don’t we just start a new path forward? That is our goal.”
