Monessen discusses new regulations regarding pets

The City of Monessen will consider adopting a new ordinance to regulate pets and animals.
The topic came up last fall, but the law was not completed or enacted.
The existing laws — including the number of dogs or cats a resident can own, regulations for chickens or waterfowl — will be covered in one ordinance with additional information and categories.
The current law limits residents to two dogs per home, but Mayor Matt Shorraw said the law should have been written based on square footage of homes.
If the new ordinance passes, the limit will be five animals if a home has 20,000 square feet or less. If a home has more than 20,000 square feet, the owner can add one more animal.
No more than four of the five animals can be dogs.
Anyone who lives in an apartment, duplex or condo can have two animals — either two cats, two dogs or one of each.
In both cases, offspring of the adult animals that are younger than 6 months old are also permitted above the normal limit.
Much of the language stayed the same, but some enforcement wording has been added in addition to other regulations.
