The school year has wrapped up at Mary of Nazareth Catholic School, and after a successful academic year amid the coronavirus pandemic, the principal is hoping for a greater semblance of normalcy next school year.
Principal Lynda McFarland is proud that the overwhelming majority of Mary of Nazareth students attended school in a brick-and-mortar setting for the entirety of the 2020-21 school year.
Mary of Nazareth, a pre-K through eighth-grade school, is nestled in a mostly residential part of White Oak. Mary of Nazareth is a Catholic consortium elementary school, and is part of the Pittsburgh East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, also known as PERCES Inc. The school was founded in 2012 as a merger between St. Joseph’s Regional Catholic School and St. Angela Merici School.
When schools were ordered to be shut down by Gov. Tom Wolf in spring 2020, the entirety of Mary of Nazareth students transitioned to synchronous online learning, which gave students the ability to interact with their teachers and classmates in real time via a one-to-one electronic device.
Thanks to teachers and administrators working closely with parents, virtual learning at Mary of Nazareth was a great success, according to McFarland.
