A popular oldies vocal harmony band that got its start in nearby Turtle Creek rocked the bandshell in McKeesport Sunday, kicking off the long-awaited summer concert series at Renziehausen Park.
In addition to being part of the Independence Day celebration, it marked the first summer concert at Renzie since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shows had to be canceled in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions regarding gatherings and social distancing.
Hits from The Vogues echoed off the McKeesport Lions Club Bandshell for listeners throughout Renziehausen Park to hear before the city’s annual Independence Day fireworks display.
As is tradition, McKeesport Lions — dressed in their purple shirts and hats — were on hand to offer assistance to concert goers and to raise funds at the concession stand.
There was also a funnel cake and lemonade stand on hand, which was run by Kathy Bosnak and her family.
Hundreds of music lovers — many wearing red, white and blue — unfolded their chairs or spread out blankets to have a good spot to jam to the Vogues.
The crowd seemed to be having a good time, with a number of people taking to dancing in the grassy area between the bandshell and the audience.
Mayor Michael Cherepko, a McKeesport Lion, said it was a great day to be at Renzie and he’s grateful to his fellow Lions for helping to make the concert series kick off without a hitch.
“Today’s festivities are a real showing of what we mean when we talk about working together for a better McKeesport,” he said. “It’s good to be back to normal after such a trying year where we really didn’t know what to expect.
“We’re looking forward to a full season of summer recreation.”
