North Charleroi: Mayor says garbage rules being ignored

With a new garbage hauler in North Charleroi, many residents are still not abiding by the borough’s refuse policies.
During a business meeting Monday, Mayor Steve Hega offered a warning to residents who continue to ignore the regulations concerning garbage pick-up.
Big’s Sanitation took over North Charleroi’s garbage contract earlier this year, but the borough has since had problems with residents not paying their bills in a timely manner and putting trash out earlier than allowed.
Hega said several homes in the borough put out their garbage bins hours — and sometimes days — too early.
“I was driving around and there are people putting cans full of garbage out four days ahead of time,” Hega said. “Some residents aren’t bringing in their garbage cans at all. We can’t have that.”
Residents are supposed to leave their garbage for pickup any time after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
“If this keeps happening, we are going to have to start fining people,” Hega said. “We don’t want to do that, but it’s something we might have to consider.”
