As the Belle Vernon Area School Board continues its search for a new superintendent, it will receive some assistance from a recent retiree.

George Lammay, who retired June 30 as the assistant superintendent in the Bentworth School District, was named the substitute and acting superintendent for BVA.

While the appointment was effective July 12, Lammay will begin his first full day in the district offices July 19. His appointment is expected to be confirmed by the school board during its July 20 meeting.

“This is an interim position and I believe the board will be proactive in finding a superintendent, so from my perspective, it won’t be long,” Lammay said.

Lammay was made aware of the position by the Bentworth’s solicitor, Ira Weiss, who recently resigned from the same position in Belle Vernon.

“I completed 34 years of work in public schools,” Lammay said.

With much of his work as an administrator, Lammay has worked in the Elizabeth Forward, West Jefferson Hills, Charleroi Area, Bethlehem Center and Bentworth school districts during his career.

“It gives me a good frame of reference to come in and provide leadership on a short-term basis,” Lammay said. “This is an odd time in education because the pandemic drove districts to a point where they never thought they would be.”
