McKeesport boys soccer wants to build on its established foundation

Last year, Bryan Fegley and the McKeesport boys soccer team set their sights on modest goals.
In Fegley’s first year as the Tigers’ coach, he just wanted to finish at .500. After going 8-6-1, the Tigers are now setting their sights higher.
“We fought through it last year. We had a lot of hurdles we had to jump with the mentality of a team and the entire program, but we made huge strides and we only plan on going up from here,” Fegley said. “The foundation is laid and now it’s about building on the foundation and really being able to play soccer and play it the right way. We’re looking to be a ten-plus win team this year.”
The Tigers are already starting to reap the benefits of their improvement, going from three wins to eight in a season.
Fegley said he has more and more kids trying out for the team, so much so that McKeesport might even have a junior varsity team this season.
The goal — beyond double digit wins — is to ride that improved depth and experience into the WPIAL. The Tigers are still playing an independent schedule this season after being dropped from the WPIAL for their lack of competitiveness.
“If we play exactly how we did last year — and I anticipate us being better than last year — we’ll have no doubt that we’ll get back in to the WPIAL,” Fegley said. “We definitely have been put on notice. A lot of teams want to play us now. We’re getting there. We’re building a program.”
