Mon Valley natives named humane society policy leaders of the year

Mess with a cat — get the claws. In Pittsburgh, they intend to keep it that way.
Mon Valley natives Tara Czekaj and Carol Whaley recently won honors as Humane Society of the United States Pennsylvania Humane Policy Leaders of the Year for their work with the City of Pittsburgh.
The animal rights advocates helped craft legislation and persuade leaders to pass an ordinance in October that banned cat declawing in the city. The ordinance levies a $500 fine to veterinarians who perform the procedure.
