Olympus loses court appeal for well pad in Allegheny County community

West Deer Township’s denial of Olympus Energy’s Dionysus Well Pad was fully upheld in Allegheny County Wednesday in a decision handed down by Court of Common Pleas Judge Joseph James.
The legal rendering has some people in the Mon Valley wondering what the court’s ruling means for Elizabeth and Rostraver townships, as officials in both communities consider proposed fracking projects from Olympus. In a written opinion affirming a Dec. 15 denial from West Deer Township’s Board of Supervisors, James wrote that, “Olympus failed to prove that the setback requirements set forth in the ordinance were satisfied” and, notably, he cited Olympus’ history of DEP violations.
