Charleroi tables budget, tax hike proposals

Charleroi Borough Council doesn’t frequently agree on anything, but council members surprised those in the audience Wednesday night by unanimously deciding to table two ordinances — the spending plan for 2023 and a motion to raise taxes 6 mills. The borough’s current financial status, which appears to include a projected deficit of $478,000 this year, has been a heated topic of discussion for the past several weeks. In November, after two budget workshops that were not attended by all members of council, Borough Manager Matt Staniszewski presented council with a preliminary 2023 spending plan with options on how to get into the black next year, with a substantial tax increase as one of the only feasible choices.
