Fish frys reel in customers for Valley churches, VFDs

Pirogies, haluski and an oversized piece of fish on a noticeably smaller bun are a part of the fabric of the Greater Pittsburgh region’s culture and traditions. And during the Lenten season, fish fry fundraisers serve as a way for Mon Valley churches, volunteer fire departments and social clubs to make their bread and butter — though many locally owned bars and restaurants in the Valley also offer a mean fish sandwich during Lent. This week, the Mon Valley Independent talked to the folks from a few popular local fish frys, who each said the events not only raise much-needed funding, but also provide an opportunity for community building at the grassroots level.
