First responders in Charleroi will be a bit safer thanks to a new collaborative initiative with the borough and fire department.
Earlier this month, the borough began to make signs that are being posted on vacant, abandoned or dilapidated buildings by fire department Capt. Matt Prentice.
The signs, made and paid for at a minimal cost by the borough, inform first responders if the building is safe to enter. Prentice said he is checking the homes, starting with a list of vacant properties provided to him by the borough.
“I’m going around and checking the houses on that list,” Prentice said. “If someone could still live in them, I’m not marking them.”
Prentice said he is posting any building that have structural damage and are falling in.
