A student engineering team based out of McKeesport Area High School will compete in an international robotics championship in Houston, Texas, this month.
Team 1708, or Amp’D Robotics, will clash against hundreds of teams from across the globe April 19-22 for a chance to win a world robotics championship.
“There will be 52 countries represented in the final,” program co-mentor Jason Mols said. “It’s a big event.”
It’s the third time the team has qualified for the world championship in the program’s 19-year history. Mols said the team’s recent success follows a change in philosophy following the pandemic.
“During COVID we kind of rebuilt the team from the ground up,” Mols said. “We changed our philosophy to: ‘Do what you do best.’ And it’s worked extremely well. I think this is one of the most cohesive teams we’ve ever had during my time with the program.”
