With his team facing elimination from the American Legion State Tournament, Ben Shields decided to put his squad on his shoulders.
Shields pitched a complete game shutout and helped himself at the plate with three hits and three RBI as Charleroi eliminated Wesleyville, 8-0, Wednesday at Rosan-Oglietti Park in Latrobe.
As a result of the win, Charleroi stays alive in the losers’ bracket and will take on (LOSER OF PAXTON AND QUAKERTOWN) today at 3:40 p.m.
Shields was in command all game against Wesleyville, as he fired a six-hitter with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
“He really pitched a good game, one we had to have,” said Charleroi manager Luke Mollis. “After losing Tuesday, we needed picked up and he gave us a lift.”
