The City of McKeesport was awarded a $1 million federal Environmental Protection Agency grant for a comprehensive environmental improvement plan, which will focus on reducing environmental and health issues throughout the city.
The funds will allow the city to address air pollution and stormwater management concerns, and the plan intends to mitigate the higher temperatures that occur in urban areas that lack greenspace, according to a news release.
“We are thankful for this opportunity to improve environmental conditions within the City of McKeesport,” Mayor Michael Cherepko said in a statement. “This, like many other endeavors here, will be a whole-community effort. I can’t say often enough that I believe in ‘working together for a better McKeesport,’ and our community is full of organizations and volunteers who are committed to our City’s health and environmental well-being.”
