Steve Shearson Jr. – Rostraver Township
Steve Shearson Jr., 86, of Rostraver Township, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023. Steve finally succumbed to his heart and lung disease after putting up the good fight! Steve, a son of the late Theresa and Steve Shearson Sr., was raised in Burgettstown, Pa., in Washington County. Steve lived as a resident of Rostraver Township for the past 50-plus years. A graduate of California State College, he had a 35-year career with Nationwide Insurance Company, from which he retired in 2002. Steve spent his adult life as a significant contributor to the Rostraver and Belle Vernon Area School District community. He was a four-term elected member of the Belle Vernon School Board and served as the board`s official secretary for most of time on the board. Steve also once served as president of the Rostraver Youth Football League program and volunteered years of service to many youth sports teams during his life here. He was Catholic by faith and an active member of the Church of St. Anne in Rostraver Township, where he was a member of the church choir for over two decades. Steve and his wife, Nancy (Waters) Shearson, to whom he was married for 41 years, were also members of the Willowbrook Couples Golf League. Steve was a proud founder, member and six-time champion of the Cedarbrook “Mensa” Monday Night Golf League, and never failed to remind his playing friends and partners of his three holes-in-one. Steve was a member of many local organizations and friendship groups, and he loved his life here in the Mon Valley community. Steve is survived by his three children, sons, Stephen (Maureen) Shearson of Rostraver Township, Greg (Mary) Shearson of Big Sky, Mont., and daughter, Amy Mattingly of Atlanta, Ga. Steve was a committed and extremely active grandfather. “Pappy” is survived by his nine grandchildren, Makenzie Shearson (fiancé, Matthew Bukovac) and Megan Shearson (Bernie) Sarra, Casey, Samantha, Ryan and Andrew Shearson, and Samuel, William and Anna Kate Mattingly. And also now one new great-granddaughter, Florence Mo Sarra. In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Nancy, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert “Sonny,” infants, Ronald and Robert and his twin, Donald Shearson. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of St. Anne, Rostraver Township with Rev. Roselo Melloria presiding. Following the funeral Mass, a private family interment will be held in West Newton Cemetery.
