After another below .500 season for the Bentworth girls basketball squad, sixth-year head coach Donna Sallee wants her team to focus on the little things and play with more confidence on the court this winter.
“We showed a lot of positive signs last season despite our record,” Sallee pointed out. “We were just very inconsistent and had a couple of close games that didn’t go our way. We are hoping to learn from those hard losses this season. I think this group has a lot of resolve and I truly believe we can turn things around in 2023-24.”
The Bearcats posted a 5-16 overall record and went 2-10 in Section 4-2A action last season.
The last playoff berth for Bentworth was in 2011-12 and they have only qualified for the WPIAL postseason four times in the last 20 years.
Bentworth will have 14 players on its roster this season, headlined by five seniors.
One of those seniors is three-year starter and point guard Amber Sallee, who led the Bearcats in scoring last winter with 11.8 points per game.
“Every year, she has developed her game,” Coach Sallee said of her daughter. “She sees the floor pretty well and can handle the ball. She’s one of our clutch shooters and she plays her best under pressure. She provides a calming leadership to the team and is a great communicator on the court.”
