The Monessen boys’ basketball team kept their winning ways going Wednesday night, as the Greyhounds came out of the gates with 32, first quarter points and extended their nine-game winning streak with a 76-34 victory over visiting California in Section 2-1A action.
“We have been harping on the guys lately about starting fast,” Monessen coach Dan Bosnic said. “We did that tonight, and I liked a lot of things I saw in that first quarter. The energy was there and our pressure was bothersome. But what really stuck out was our rebounding and our unselfishness with sharing the basketball on offense.”
The only loss of the winter for the Greyhounds (10-1, 4-0) was against Yough in the second game of the season. Monessen has especially been dominant in section play, outscoring their four section foes by a 289-159 margin.
“We are running are own race,” Bosnic said about the rest of section play. “The section is important, and every game we need to get better. We are in first place, and we know we are going to get everyone’s best game in the second half of the section schedule.”
Lorenzo Gardner led a quartet of double-digit scorers for the home team with 22 points, while Rodney Johnson tallied nine of his 17 points in the opening eight minutes. Devontae Robinson and Tyvaughn Kershaw collected 12 points apiece in the win.
