Despite the rainy forecast, many still attend Memorial Day services
MON VALLEY TOWNS have proven repeatedly that they have a special touch when it comes to honoring veterans.
Despite the rainy forecast, that was on display again over Memorial Day weekend with services throughout the area recognizing those who lost their lives in the service of our country.
As they are every year, the tributes were moving, inspiring and reflective of a genuine love of the men and women who protect our nation’s freedoms.
Unfortunately, the stormy forecast — combined with the unpredictable nasty weather our region has been dealing with of late — led to the cancellation of Memorial Day services in several communities, including Belle Vernon and Elizabeth.
While we understand the concern for everyone’s safety, we hope next year they will incorporate back-up plans, such as having the Memorial Day services inside a fire hall or a legion, in the event of inclement weather.
Observances like the ones over the weekend are vital to preserve the memories of fallen soldiers and to remind younger generations of the often-terrible price of war.
Their memories deserve to be honored and remembered. Surely we can come up with alternative ways to honor them rather than canceling services all together.
Fortunately, a group of residents took it upon themselves to hold an impromptu Memorial Day service at Belle Vernon Cemetery. We applaud these folks for taking the initiative to honor and pay their respects to our fallen military members. Small towns like the ones in the Mon Valley have historically sent a high percentage of their residents to the armed services, and it’s good to see our leaders and residents still appreciate those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
