• Good things come to those who wait. This is true for the California Trojans, who had to wait 40 hours to finish the final four innings of their WPIAL Class A championship game against rival Carmichaels. The Trojans broke a 1-1 tie to win the game 6-1 to take the Class A title. California coach Nick Damico said, “I am really proud of how our kids handled this. They had two days to think about the second half of the game but they stayed focused and relaxed. We came to play today.” The delay may have helped the Trojans win as WPIAL rules prevented Carmichaels’ pitching ace from playing in this game.
• New Charleroi football coach Don Militzer showed a lot of enthusiasm when talking to fans at a “Meet the Coach” night sponsored by the school board. Introducing the new coach, Athletic Director Bill Wiltz said, “This is an exciting time and you are probably going to hear the word ‘exciting’ a lot tonight.” Militzer told the gathered fans, “I don’t want to hear the word ‘rebuilding.’ We’re here to win and we’re here to win now. This is a beautiful facility and our goal is to have a home playoff game here … and we want to have it here this year.”
