Preorders are requested for the Rostraver Lions barbecue on Saturday.
This week’s barbecue hosted by the Rostraver Lions will benefit the Belle Vernon Area School District.
Proceeds from Saturday’s barbecue will be donated to the Belle Vernon Area School District to purchase books to be given out to students at an event later this summer.
The barbecues are held in the Howard Hanna Simon Real Estate Services parking lot, 1751 Rostraver Road, Rostraver Township, from 11 a.m. to sellout.
The Rostraver Lions have been holding summer barbecues for 15 years, in which the proceeds always go towards a local cause.
“We’re trying to raise funds so that we can purchase 1,400 books for every elementary school student from kindergarten through sixth grade,” Rostraver Lion Cindy Gregg said. “Because it’s unfortunate that a lot of students don’t have a book in their house.”
The barbecue fundraiser was inspired by a bigger project called the Reading Action Program, which is led by Lions International and aims to increase literacy worldwide.
According to Gregg, their goal is to reach $7,500 so they can buy an accurate amount of books for all the students.
“Obviously, we’re not going to be able to make that much this weekend but any little bit helps,” Gregg said.
They’re hoping to use these funds for an event BVA will hold next school year called Reading Under the Stars.
Gregg added that they will have an area where people can donate books if they would like to at the barbecue.
All pork steaks and rib dinners must be preordered. More than three chicken dinner orders must also be preordered. Dinners are $10 for a chicken or pork steak dinner, $15 for a half rack of ribs and $25 for a full rack of ribs.
All preorders must be made before 9 p.m. Friday by calling or texting 724-323-5458. Orders must include a name, type of dinner(s) and side for each dinner (baked beans or applesauce) and drink requested. Drink options are Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, root beer, orange or water.
