• Monessen assistant boys basketball coach Jim Arnold and Brandon Jackson, the Greyhounds all-time No. 2 scorer, were members of the men’s 21-and-older bracket in the Eat ‘n Park/HOPE Network Hoops Classic 3 on 3 basketball tournament at the parking lot between Heinz Field and PNC Park. Larry Davis and
Owen Hannah rounded out their team.
• Mon Valley Country Club pro Steve Kusenko was eight strokes behind going into the second and final round of the Tri-State Open at Sharon Country Club. Kusenko shot a 6-over par 76, good enough for an 11-way tie for 51st. Kevin Shields, assistant pro at Nemacolin Woodlands, is the first-round leader after shooting a 2-under par 66. After getting two bogeys on the first four holes.

• The Mon Valley Merchants Basketball League will tip-off its fifth season at the Monessen Civic Center with a new look. There are two new sponsors and four of the teams have new names.
Nazareth Victoria has stepped down as league president and Jim Stepoli has taken over that role. Mike Bright, one of the league’s stand-out players is back and will play for Union Grill after being the leagues top pick in the draft. Union Grill is one of two new league sponsors along with Smitty’s Car Care. The opener will pit Union Grill against Tarks, followed by Smitty’s against Foster House.
• Collinsburg scored five runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 7-6 deficit and defeat Valley, 11-7, in a battle of two of the Belle Vernon-Rostraver Softball League’s top teams. Joel Koricich belted a home run and two singles and Dane Kassler doubled and singled to lead the winners. Dave Orlandi (triple and two singles) and Alby Van Divner (double and two singles) looked best for Valley. Bakers Pub remains in first place after defeating BIC 16-8; Just-A-Tavern beat Flasks 22-7; Step II nipped Slovak Club 11-10 and Elite defeated S & B 23-6.
