Mon Valley DAR chapter
The June 8 combined meeting of Monongahela Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and National Pike Chapter DAR was held at the Clubhouse Grille at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver Township. Ten Mon Valley members and seven National Pike members attended.

Vice Regent Mica Van Fossen, Monongahela chapter, welcomed all and turned the floor over to Regent Phyllis Sams, National Pike chapter, who conducted the ritual, the flag pledge, reading of the American’s Creed and the Preamble to the Constitution.
National Pike Chaplain Jean Anthony gave table grace.
After a buffet-style lunch, a 10-year certificate of membership was presented to Linda Wellerson by National Pike Regent Sams. The president general’s message was read by Cynthia Ault, National Pike. The National Defense report was read by Grace Martin, Mon Valley chapter, who discussed naming June as National PTSD Awareness Month.
Patti Tomasic read the Indian minute about Maria TallChief, a Native American woman of the Osage tribe. TallChief was a famous ballerina, the only American-Indian female dancer to be part of the Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Company.
Monongahela Valley chapter historian Sara Tschudi presented a PowerPoint program titled, “The American Flag through the Years.”
Tschudi discussed many unknown historical facts concerning our national emblem and the flag code, concerning the care and rules of respect for the flag. Game papers were passed out to attendees along with a star cut out from a flag that could not be used anymore due to its poor condition, Tschudi noted this flag had originally flown over the USA and a star was given to each attendee.
Two chapter veterans were honored:: Dolores Alekson, a nurse who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and Nancy Komlos, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970-1974. The chapter members thanked them and gave the two ladies a round of applause.
Announcements included:
• Sams, National Pike, announced the July 13, 224th celebration of the Whiskey Rebellion to be held in Washington, Pa.; a trip to the Fort Necessity Memorial July 7-14; and the district meeting of the Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution to be held at the Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township on July 2.
Vice Regent Van Fossen announced the July 13 meeting of the Monongahela Valley Chapter will be held at noon at Smitty’s Grill in Speers. Those attending will cover their lunch.
Van Fossen also announced the combined DAR/SAR meeting and picnic will be held Aug. 17 at Mingo Creek County Park.
The benediction was delivered by National Pike Chaplain Jean Anthony.
