• The Belle Vernon Area coaching community has added two new members.
Ellen Hildebrand was hired Monday to head up the girls basketball team. Hildebrand is a 1978 Montour High School graduate who was head coach at West Greene for two years after a three-year stint as an assistant at Waynesburg. Her record with the Lady Pioneers was 14-29 including 6-14 in her last campaign. The school board also hired Mark Wassilchalk, who will serve as the assistant boys soccer coach. A 1992 BVA graduate, Wassilchalk played soccer for the Leps and captained the team in his senior year.
• Though the Charleroi American Legion Baseball team is made up of a lot of nice guys, but this Monday they seemed like a bunch of Wild Men. The outfielders committed five errors while their pitchers issued 10 walks, hit two batters, threw five wild pitches and even balked twice. The result was a 21-4 shellacking at the hands of Point Marion.

• Mid Mon Valley resident William “Wild Bill” Ellis will be the broadcaster for the 5th annual Mid Mon Valley rodeo. Williams grew up in the Mon Valley but has always been interested in the western sport. Williams is well qualified to keep the crowd informed about what’s happening in the arena. Williams spent some time as professional rodeo cowboy participating in bareback riding and steer wrestling. He continues to take part in team roping events as both a “heeler” and a “header.” Not only is he familiar with all of the events but Ellis is well acquainted with most of the performers.
