• Farmers Insurance fought off Dairy Queen in J. Budd Grebb Summer Basketball League action. The 74-65 win means that the Farmers Insurance team is hot on the heels of the league-leading BeeGraphix. Noah Brown made his presence felt by scoring a string of three-pointers in the first half racking up 15 points in that frame. He continued to lead the Farmers Insurance team with a game-high 25 points. Dairy Queen closed the gap to three points but a 9-2 run by Farmers sealed the deal.

• Dan LaCarte is waiting for his one true love to call him. LaCarte is not waiting for a girlfriend but rather a call from the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. LaCarte was a standout for the former Charleroi gridiron standout who later played three seasons as a starting guard for the Pitt Panthers. LaCarte is currently living at home and working at his family’s business. LaCarte, who recently tried out for the Buffalo Bills said, “Football is my passion. I am not going to give up on it by any means. I’ve been working hard and lifting.” LaCarte is trying to build himself up as he believes the Bills were looking for someone a little bigger than his current weight.
• The Monessen Summer Girls Basketball League playoffs begin at the Monessen Civic Center with a full offering of six games. The Greyhounds have taken the regular-season title and will play against the winner of the Uniontown and Elizabeth Forward. Charleroi, which is coming off a four game winning streak, will tip off against Bentworth while Brownsville, the league’s second-place team, will go up against the winner of the Charleroi/ Bentworth game.
