During the past few months, the Joyful Bloomers Garden Club has been very active and having fun.
In April, members Sally Buchleitner and Andrea Rice presented a program at the Carnegie Library of McKeesport titled “Recycling, Repurposing and Reusing.” The program was open to the public and some very useful and unique ways of recycling were shared. At the request of Mary Rose Bendall, the club planted flowers in the four cement planters that stand at the front entrance of the library.
On June 5, the club held its annual plant and bake sale at the entrance to the Kane Regional Living Center. That afternoon, during a ceremony, the club was honored to be included in the Kane Regional Foundation Hall of Fame. It was attended by McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko. The certificate was in appreciation of the club’s exceptional service and dedication to the residents and community. This event is its biggest fundraiser.
The following Saturday, the Joyful Bloomers participated in the McKeesport Good Neighbor Day on Fifth Avenue. Members of the club met amazing people, answered gardening questions, handed out bookmarks and sold annuals and perennials.
The club will not meet this month, but is busy planning the Bring a Guest Day for Aug. 7 at a pavilion in McKeesport’s Renzie Park. Guest speaker will be Ben Kehoe of the Audubon Society. A pot-luck lunch will be prepared by the members.
The Joyful Bloomers welcomes new members. It meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Kane Regional Community Living Center at 100 Ninth St.
