“Let’s Party” was the theme of Valley Garden Club’s biannual Standard Flower Show July 11 at the Mon Valley YMCA in Carroll Township.
Valley Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs Inc., Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs Inc., and Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania- District X. The Flower Show schedule, written by Mary Jane Martucci, was reviewed by Pittsburgh Area Judges Council schedule advisor. The show was judged by accredited Flower Show judges.
In the Horticulture division “card games,” there were nine sections to enter specimens. All entries must be grown by the exhibitor and be in their possession not less than 90 days.
In the Design division “Hopscotch,” there were three sections with three designs in each section. A total of nine different designs.
The Education division “Look and Learn” there were two exhibits, “Look for the Spotted Lanternfly” and “Look at the Plastics.”
Flower Show chairman was Mary Jane Martucci with Angie Raitano as substitute chairman. Co-chairmen were Pam Gregor and Janice Yeaton.
Judging was from 10 a.m. to noon and was open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. with free admission.
Club winners were:
• Cecil Verkleeren, Design Excellence award for her semi-formal table for two entitled “Black Tie.” She also won the Table Artistry Award for this same design and an Arboreal Award for Hemlock and Award of Merit for Hosta. She also won the Sweepstakes Award for Design.
• Martha Alexander, Petite Award for a petite design “Paint & Sip” designed in a wine glass not to exceed 12 inches.
• Mary Jane Martucci, Designer’s Choice Award for “Oscar Night” staged on a 8-foot table. She also won Award of Horticulture Excellence and Grower’s Choice Award for her dish garden.
• Janice Yeaton, Arboreal Award for Hydranga “Big Leaf,” Award of Merit for Stargazer Lily. Janice also won the Sweepstake Award for Horticulture for the most first place entries.
• Pam Gregor, Award of Merit for Sage (herb) and Award of Merit for Marigold.
• Elaine Harmon, Award of Merit for Bloom Poppy.
• Roxanne Huss, GCFP Education and/or Conservation Award Silver Award for an exhibit — “Look for the Spotted Lanternfly.” She also won the NGC Educational Top Exhibit Award for “Look at the Plastics,” an exhibit about recycling.
The next Standard Flower Show will be held in 2026.
