Homesteading classes to be held at Greenock Log House
Learn homesteading tips to preserve foods at the historic log house in Elizabeth Township.
For the MVI
Sourdough bread, bread and butter pickles and sauerkraut preserved the same way some great-grandmothers did will be the focus at the Greenock Log House on Aug. 24.
Elizabeth Township Historical Society members Cindy Dukic and Marilyn Backus will offer insight into these preserving ways during homesteading classes from noon to 4 p.m. at the log house.
Recipes will be available in a cookbook for $5 for those interested in this popular growing way to again preserve foods from the garden.
Samples may be tasted, along with hot dogs, baked goods and refreshments that will be served, too.
These classes are part of the series of programs offered on the fourth Saturdays of the month at the 1790 log home that will be open for tours at 1235 Greeenock Buena Vista Road, Elizabeth Township.
The restored two-story home features an unusual “turkey-breast fireplace,” remnants of the original bead-board wall board and door and many period household items. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a third converted to a school room.
Space is still available for artists, crafters and vendors to sell their goods at Greenock Log House Days set for Sept. 28.
To reserve a spot, send a $30 check made to Log House Fund and mail to Debbie Gilbert, 1109 Sommerset Street, McKeesport, Pa. 15135.
