A McKeesport man is in custody following a pursuit that began in Beltzhoover and ended on Banksville Road in Pittsburgh, according to Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus.
A deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday involving 22-yearold Tyler Stewart after he was observed driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on Bausman Street, Kraus stated.
That resulted in a pursuit that began along Saw Mill Run Boulevard, continued onto Crane Avenue and Banksville Road and ended when Stewart crashed the Jeep Cherokee he was driving into another vehicle at the intersection of Banksville Road and Mc-Monagle Avenue. The person operating that vehicle suffered a broken pelvis, Kraus said.
Stewart attempted to flee on foot, according to police, running into the parking lot of Banksville Plaza where he attempted to carjack a vehicle by trying to pull out an elderly man. Stewart was chased by two people who witnessed the attempted carjacking with Stewart crossing Banksville Road before being tackled by the witnesses. A county deputy and Pittsburgh police officers took Stewart into custody.
A search of the Jeep produced a handgun with a loaded clip, an assault- style weapon with a loaded clip and other items in addition to the body armor that Stewart was wearing at the time of his arrest, Kraus said.
“First off, I am thankful that the person injured as the result of this reckless and criminal conduct did not sustain life threatening injuries, and we hope for a quick recovery,” Kraus said. “While we can’t say with any certainty what this individual’s intentions were last night, it’s clear from the way he was outfitted and from the items recovered from the car, that he is an extremely dangerous person who posed a significant threat to the safety of our community.”
Stewart was transported to Allegheny County Jail for arraignment on more than a dozen charges. He is also facing detainers on active bench warrants from Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties.
