Belle Vernon VFW to meet Wednesday
The Westmoreland Fair begins today through Aug. 24 at 123 Blue Ribbon Lane in Mt. Pleasant Township.

Admission is $10 at the gate, which includes parking, amusement rides, admission to all commercial and agricultural exhibits and judging exhibitions. Grandstand arena events are not included. Early bird admission before 2 p.m. is $5 (rides not included.) No early bird admission on Aug. 24. Fair admission is free for children 2 and younger. Gates open today at 4 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday through Aug. 24.

Belle Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 699 will conduct a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the post on Broad Avenue in North Belle Vernon.
Penn Highlands offering free prostate screening
Penn Highlands Mon Valley, 1163 Country Club Road, Carroll Township, is offering a free prostate education and screening program 4 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center.
Attendees will learn about the importance of early detection and have the option to receive an exam by Penn Highlands Mon Valley’s medical staff along with a Prostate Specific Antigen blood test. The program is intended for men ages 50-75 who do not already have a diagnosis of prostate problems as well as for those with a family history of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in men, and one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. However, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive. The five-year survival rate in the U.S. for men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer is greater than 99% largely due to early diagnosis.
Concert in the park to be held in Forward Township
A concert in the park will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gallatin-Sunnyside Park featuring Rick Purcell’s Dixieland Jazz Band. Admission and parking are free. Concessions will be open. Bring a chair.

Elizabeth Township Historical Society will host a fleatique as part of Boston Days yard sales from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. The fleatique will offer items to reuse, renew or repurpose at 5811 Smithfield St., in Boston, Elizabeth Township.
