Homer eager to rebuild McKeesport girls program
Following a challenging season with a roster of only 13 players, McKeesport girls soccer coach Adam Homer and his squad are eager to turn the page and start anew.
With the departure of several key seniors and the introduction of fresh talent – including some first-time players – the team is focused on building upon the lessons learned last year.
“We lost a ton of seniors last year,” said Homer. “The lessons that we learned aren’t really going to translate to this season. This year, we actually have an opportunity to recreate our team and focus on longevity. I have freshmen who have never played before, and I want to see them do well and dominate when they’re seniors.”
As the team focuses on rebuilding and preparing for the future, Homer emphasized the importance of simplifying their approach on the field.
“We’re trying to over-simplify each play,” said Homer. “That requires us having strong captains that reach out to the girls and mentor them, which is what we have this year. I just want these girls to enjoy it and play hard.”
Homer’s approach to the team and the game of soccer is refreshing. While maintaining a competitive edge within the section, his primary focus is ensuring the girls truly enjoy their time on the team.
He highlighted key players on the roster he’s excited about, and it’s no surprise that one of those leaders is his daughter, Addison.
After spending the last two years as the team’s goalkeeper, she is now set to make a significant impact in her senior season, and he’s eager to see what she can achieve in her natural position.
“Addison is going to have an exciting year,” Homer said. “The last two years, she was playing goalie when she’s really a good center- midfielder. This season, we’re going to keep her out there on the field. She’s a great finisher and an even better leader because she isn’t selfish. I’m excited to see what she can accomplish this year.”
“Victoria Fast is another player I’m excited for. Her last name is Fast, and she truly is. She’s a strong athlete all-around and her and Addy really feed off of each other.
“Kaitlyn Brush will be playing the sweeper position, which is new to her, and she has some big shoes to fill. I’m confident in my three captains, though. It starts with them.”
Homer’s confidence in his three captains sets the tone for the team on the field. As the players step into pivotal roles, they’re supported not only by their coach but also by a strong network of alumni who continue to contribute to the program’s success.
“A lot of the girls who played in the past have come back and helped us coach this team, which is awesome,” said Homer. “Autumn Tavaglione will be an assistant coach for me this season. She graduated two years ago.
Paige Matthews, as well, is a huge part of this team, and both of them coming back and helping out means the world to us. A lot of new girls, so the extra hands help a lot.”
The return of former players like Tavaglione and Matthews has strengthened the team’s bond, providing mentorship to the new faces on the roster. This camaraderie and support are crucial as the team prepares for the season ahead.
With the focus on creating a lasting environment for the program to grow, Homer is dedicated to laying the groundwork for future success. His vision extends beyond immediate results, emphasizing the importance of developing young talent and creating a strong tradition within McKeesport soccer.
“It’s all about building a tradition here, and rebuilding the program is step one,” said Homer. “It starts with younger players being focused on and shaping these girls so that they’re ready once they get to the high school level. It’s not going to pay off in the first year or so, but give us three or four years and we should have a good program again.”
McKeesport begins their season at home against California Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
