Work on the new Glassport police station is progressing on schedule.
During a council meeting this week, Councilwoman Amy Nabors said the demolition project portion of the project is almost complete. Nabors said the main focus now is the installation of the fire alarm system throughout the building. She also said council is currently accepting bids for replacement of the borough building roof.
Repairs to the exterior and interior of the Vina March Senior Citizens Center is scheduled to begin. State Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-West Mifflin was able to secure a $20,000 state grant to cover the costs of the repair.
In other senior center news, podiatrist Dr. Eric A. Freiwald will begin visiting the center every nine weeks starting Sept 3. Freiwald will be doing nail trimming and foot checks for local seniors. Those interested in this service should contact the senior center.
Council also announced several upcoming events:
• The inaugural Glassport Community Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Honor Roll Park, followed by a free concert at 6 p.m.
• The Glassport Development Corp. annual car show will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on Monongahela Avenue.
• Glassport National Night Out will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Honor Roll Park. The backpack giveaway originally scheduled for Aug. 3 will now be part of Community Day.
Council President Anthony Colecchi said the Mobile Giant Eagle market is drawing about 35 customers each week.
Tree Pittsburgh is launching an “Adopt-A-Tree” program in Glassport. The group will have a booth at Community Day where it will hand out information. They plan to begin planting trees in Glassport beginning next spring.
Borough Manager Elaina Skiba said the following Glassport properties are being listed for sale by the land bank: 316 Fifth Ave., 311 Euclid, 435 Iowa Ave., 310 N. Monongahela Ave. and 626 Ohio Ave. The following properties are awaiting sheriff’s sale: 843 Delaware, and 319 N. Monongahela Ave.
Skiba said she will give council a monthly report on the borough’s ongoing sewer project. The survey of the sewer system has been completed and the data is being digitized. The television inspection of the sewers will begin soon and will give the borough engineers a better picture of what work needs to be done to rebuild the system.
