My daughter was born in December 2008, a month or so after the nation elected Barack Obama as its first Black president. I was giddy with joy, not only celebrating her birth but also hailing the remarkable achievement that presaged, I thought, a bright future for her, unsullied by the overt racism that had characterized so much of America’s history. I didn’t foresee what the next eight years would bring.
