Monessen residents can now take a look at virtual plans for repairs to the Reed Avenue Bridge, known locally as “the viaduct,” being made at no cost to the City of Monessen.
PennDOT District 12, along with the Federal Highway Administration, invites the community to review the virtual plans display of the Districtwide Local Bridge Preservation project.
The Reed Avenue Bridge project is expected to begin in the spring of 2025 and finished by fall.
The bridge, which was built in 1976, stands nearly 100 feet above Third Street. It is listed as 425 feet in length and 39 feet in width. The bridge is listed in fair condition, according to PennDOT.
Mayor Ron Mozer discussed PennDOT’s potential plans for the viaduct’s repair at the July 25 council meeting.
The scope of the work includes repairing the bridge deck and sidewalks; replacing the expansion dam seals; installing new latex concrete overlay on the bridge deck; applying protective coating to the bridge deck, sidewalk and barriers; repairing the bridge fence; cleaning and lubricating the bridge bearings; and painting the ends of the steel beams.
The existing roadway width will be maintained.
The following traffic detours will be in place during construction:
• Northbound Traffic will use Ninth Street, south Route 906 northbound (Schoonmaker Avenue), First Street, McKee Avenue and Rostraver Street.
• Southbound traffic will use Sixth Street, Knox Avenue, Ninth Street, Tenth Street, south Route 906 (Donner Avenue), First Street, McKee Avenue and Rostraver Street.
Pedestrian traffic will be maintained across the bridge during construction.
PennDOT expects the full closure will last for approximately two months.
