New class graduates from Pa. State Police Academy
Applications for the next round of training are being accepted through Nov. 27.
Last week, 59 cadets graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and will now become state troopers.
Five will join the PSP barracks in Washington: Allan Bernard, Justin E. Cramer, Hunter T. Heaton, Jacob C. Jesteadt and Payton M. Zatek.
On Tuesday, the PSP opened a new application cycle for those interested in pursuing that career path.
Last year, at the direction of Gov. Josh Shapiro, PSP suspended its educational requirement of 60 college credits.
Since then, PSP has seen an uptick in qualified applicants.
The most recent application period, which ran from May 8 through Aug. 20, received 1,743 applications.
In 2023, the last hiring cycle with the college credit requirement, only 1,374 eligible applications were received over six months.
Col. Christopher Paris, Commissioner of the PSP, said they are seeking people who are eager to succeed.
“We’re looking for individuals who strive to succeed beyond the challenges of their surroundings,” Paris said. “If you want to help and serve others, are willing to work hard for the betterment of your community and hold yourself to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, consider joining our ranks as a Pennsylvania state trooper.”
Applications can be submitted via the commonwealth’s employment website until Nov. 27.
Applicants who meet all eligibility requirements will move on to a qualifying written examination.
Those who pass the written exam have to successfully complete a polygraph examination, background investigation, physical readiness test, medical screening and psychological screening before they can start training at the academy.
Qualified applicants must:
• Have a high school diploma or GED certificate and a valid driver’s license from any state.
• Be at least 20 years old at the time of their application.
• Be at least 21 years old and can-
