The Mary Ellen O’Neill Division No. 4 of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians celebrated its 40th anniversary at Domenico’s on Grand in Monessen.
The very first and formational meeting of the chapter was held on Aug. 2, 1984, at St. Jerome’s Lyceum in Charleroi. The pledge of membership was administered to the ladies by the officers of the LAOH Division No. 3 of Donora: Mary Margaret Kuzeppa, Alice Grimes, Mary McKee, Frances Smith and Adelaide Lynch. New officers were elected and Mary Ellen O’Neill became the first president. In later years, Division No. 3 merged with Division No. 4, forming the Mary Ellen ONeill Division.
At Wednesday’s celebration, Treasurer Dorothy Weldon was honored by the group for being the recipient of a National Award for her exemplary life as a Hibernian. She received flowers and a Waterford crystal shamrock from the membership. President Carole Seader distributed an Irish treat bag to each member in the group. Weldon also gifted the ladies with an Irish coin purse and Ellen Cmar shared Irish crocheted shamrocks.
Following lunch, Ellen Cmar presented a beautiful and delicious anniversary cake. The ladies are looking forward to another 40 years.
Anyone interested in joining the LAOH can contact any member or call St. Andrew the Apostle Parish for information. All Catholic women of Irish descent are welcome.
