Commodores breeze past Geibel in straight sets
It’s still early in the season, but Frazier’s volleyball team seemed to be hitting on all cylinders on Tuesday against Geibel Catholic.
The Commodores swept the Gators by scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-11.
Frazier coach Mandy Hartman assessed her team’s performance, while her players were singing “Happy Birthday” to her husband and assistant coach, Don Hartman.
“We still have a lot of work to do before everything plays out,” she said. “We’re playing for the end of October and early November. We want to get better every day.”
She was pleased with her front line play of Allie Monack, Grace Vaughn, and Addison Schultz, who have been a force for opposing teams.
Frazier has also worked on setting in the off season, and had 16 combined service aces on Tuesday.
“We try to make that part of our offensive game,” Mandy Hartman said. “The girls got into it, and are scoring a lot of points behind the line.
Geibel Catholic coach Collin Brant and assistant coach Gianna Ryan said they are pleased with their team’s progress thus far.
“They’ve had different coaches the last four years,” Brant said. “They’ve been learning something new every year. But I don’t plan to go anywhere and neither does Gianna.”
Brant and Ryan praised their team’s efforts, and noted that Sarah Konieczny has been a veteran server for years while basketball standout Emma Larkin is learning quickly in her first year on the team.
Frazier (3-2, 2-0) got off to fast starts in all three sets, but Geibel Catholic had some moments to build upon.
Konieczny’s service ace gave the Gators their only lead of the night at 1-0 in the first set.
Frazier then ran off six consecutive points led by three kills from Madelyn Salisbury, Vaughn, and Allie Monack.
Geibel Catholic (0-4) had a two point run on a Frazier service error, and a kill by Mallory Clemmor. Leading 6-4, Frazier earned eight of the next 10 points as Addison Day had a finishing point and Addison Hills had a service ace.
Clemmor interrupted the run with a kill for GC, but an ace by Monack and a kill by Schultz extended the lead to 14-6.
Schultz went on a personal tear with a kill and four service aces in a seven-point run that built a 21-8 lead.
Leading 21-9, Vaughn scored a kill, and Morgan Fisher served three consecutive aces to win out at 25-9.
In the second set, Frazier jumped on top 4-0 and 9-3. At 14-5, Vaughn had a kill, but a service error and a service ace by Larkin cut the deficit to 17-7.
Down the stretch, Konieczny had an ace for Geibel Catholic and Vaughn had an ace for Frazier.
The teams traded service errors before the Commodores won out at 25-12.
Geibel had a gritty late comeback in the third set after Frazier had built a 16-5 lead.
After a time at 1-1, Monack had three kills, and Schultz had a pair of kills. Aces by Salisbury and Monack built a 10-3 lead.
At 17-6, Konieczny had her third ace of the night, Nolace Petrosky added a point, and a pair of Frazier service errors left the score at 1910. Clemmor had a kill and Day had an ace down the stretch for the Gators, but Monack, Salisbury, and Schultz combined for Frazier points to win out at 25-11.
Frazier will travel to Belle Vernon for a non-section match Monday, while Geibel Catholic will host California Thursday.
