• Monessen continued its unbeaten start in Section 4-A boys soccer with a 6-2 win over host Chartiers- Houston. The Greyhounds, who have scored 28 goals and given up only five all season, set a new school record by winning five straight games to start the season. Monessen coach Sam Perry said, “No Monessen team has ever started out the season 5-0, so obviously, I’m pleased. We’re playing well.” The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Blair Madison scored the first of his three goals.
• Nine members of the Class of 2013 will be inducted into the Charleroi High School Sports Hall of Fame before the Cougars contest with Washington. Set to be honored will be Fran “Cheech” Celaschi, Dick Kujawski, Lew Rawls, brothers Martin and Matt Matyas, Bill Wagner, Debbie Fallenstine, Gary Hogan and John “Hoss” Hostetler. Fallenstine was the lone female in the group and was the first female to score a 1,000 points in high school, finishing with a career total of 1,264. She later returned to her alma mater as a coach.

• The Belle Vernon Area Leps entered Keystone Conference play with revenge on their mind. The Leps opened up the season against the Uniontown Red Raiders, the team that kept them out of the playoffs last year. Belle Vernon marched into Bill Power Stadium and proceeded to roll over the Red Raiders to win a 27-6 victory. The Leps limited the Red Raiders to just 180 yards and a single touchdown.
• The Ringgold girls soccer team posted a 6-0 win over Yough in Section 6-3A play. Michele DiPaola led the Rams with three goals while Amanda Shine added two more. Stefani Zurawski had the other goal. Ringgold had a 2-0 lead at halftime with DiPaola scoring twice on assists from Shine.
