• The longest winning streak at the beginning of the season for the Monessen boys soccer team has ended at seven. The Greyhounds dropped their first game of the season Tuesday at Beth-Center 3-0 in a Section 4-A showdown. The Bulldogs now own first place. The Greyhounds trailed 1-0 at halftime and Beth-Center added two insurance goals in the second half of the game. Monessen coach Sam Perry said, “We played well but couldn’t get the breaks we needed to finish. But to give B-C their due, they played well.”
• Belle Vernon Area’s Michael Lubrani and Elizabeth Forward’s Mike Ragan are in, but Belle Vernon’s Alex Bates and Elizabeth’s Pat McCall are not. That was the story at the WPIAL’s Class AAA Section 2 Individual Qualifier at Duck Hollow Golf Course. Lubrani, a freshman, and Ragan, a junior, were among five players to qualify as a result of their rounds. Lubrani shot a 38-41-79 to finish third on the 72-hole course while Ragan (39-4281) was fourth.

• The heavy rains kept the fans away as the Belle Vernon Leopards held on to secure a 6-0 victory over Laurel Highlands to take sole possession of first place in the Keystone Conference. Third-year Coach Jesse Cramer said, “I don’t know if the weather hurt us more. I thought they played better than we did. It was a terrible game for us.” The Leps managed only 126 total offensive yards with 44 coming on one run by quarterback Nick Keefer. The games lone score came at the end of the first half when C.J. Bell scored from 1 yard out.
• Straub’s Mon Valley United will resume its season in the Western Pennsylvania Soccer Association Over-30 league in their debut at their new home field, Palmer Park in Donora. The United will take on Mount Pleasant to kick off their second half of the season. The United opened their season on the road when they defeated Peters Township, 3-2.
