• The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department was on the verge of bankruptcy until state Rep. Peter J. Daley came to its rescue. Daley received word that a $50,000 state Department of Economic Development grant had been approved for the department, which plans to pay down its debt of about $500,000. Department officials told township supervisors that they were in danger of closing down and leaving the community unprotected.
• The 20th annual “Monessenite West” reunion was held recently in Anaheim, Calif. A “Monessenite” is a former resident of the city who now calls Southern California home. About 70 people attended the landmark event, which opened with a nostalgic song about their home town called “A Special Place.” A proclamation from Monessen Mayor John DeLuca commending the group was read at the luncheon. All in attendance received several gifts from Monessen state Rep. Ted Harhai and a 20th anniversary calendar titled “Our Home Town.”
